Merry Xmas from George & Etta

The Christmas Lights are another highlight of the Mid-Northumberland Calendar.

They are good because there are lots of lights, they move, and they are themed to relate to their context.  Things like a turkey outside the Gazette office - um, I mean outside Turnbulls butchers.  Sorry.

The lights are well known for being cool.  They usually get some kind of national press coverage  (sort of like the stories which local TV news always has at Christmas about how the Post Office have lots of cards to deliver).

They are funded entirely privately.  Businesses having their own displays and people being invited to sponsor bulbs.

Given that Christmas is, mainly, for most people, a happy time, it may be considered odd that two regular lights consist of sad faces.

Possibly understandable sad face on the side of the Playhouse
The first one is, perhaps, understandable because it relates to the Playhouse and flashes alternately with a similar happy face.

Positively strange sad face on the Bondgate Tower. The second is the Bondgate Tower which has no business looking like a sad face at all.  But it does.  I don't  think it can be an accident, either.  I mean I know they're Percy crescents and everything but they didn't have to put them there, did they?  And the lit up windows (which need not have been illuminated) just look like tears.  Gatehouse as pierrot, I call it.  But for what (or whom) does it weep?  And, face facts: a weeping gatehouse isn't all that Christmassy.
