ALNWICK: THE BAGPUSS CONNECTION |
| Well now, Alnwick
is a rather unusual kind of town and so it would have to have a Bagpuss
connection. And so it does.
You could probably guess the Northumbrian influence from the music. Maybe. In 1999, following the sudden acquisition of cult status by Bagpuss (which Alnwick on Lion considers to be passe; we were reviving Bagpuss no later than 1994), Sandra Kerr got together with John Faulkner and re-recorded all the Bagpuss songs and they're available in the UK for £10 (including postage). Click on the image above to find out where to order them. Sadly online ordering isn't available yet, but then you can't make chocolate biscuits out of butterbeans and breadcrumbs, can you? The CD contains such delights as Uncle Feedle, the Prima Ballerina and Row, row, row your boat. The same label have also released some other Sandra Kerr recordings which I quite like. The one I especially like is NEAT AND COMPLETE (FECD107). It was recorded with her daughter Nancy. Not quite Bagpuss but still pretty good. The opening track is "Lads of Alnwick". It ought to have been inspired by a fight in the bottles but it doesn't sound as though it was. A friend of mine interviewed her a few years ago and she said how much fun Bagpuss had been to make and that, if you listen carefully, you can occasionally hear them giggling in the background. Nigel's
Smallfilms Treasury is the best Bagpuss site on the web.
