WHERE TO STAY |
This decreasingly poor page is slowly developing. There are now two places who have agreed to be listed here and which have email addresses if you want to stay with them. Of all the places listed this page, only the Oaks isn't particularly central. Tony, who runs the Oronsay, wishes me to add that the Oronsay is the place to be in Alnwick. Actually I suspect his wife really runs it but you can find out for yourself by staying there.
The Council will send you a free
brochure about Alnwick and district if you

Very reasonably priced
(I'm told) and kept by a top notch local solicitor - so no complaints, mind.
Oronsay is a very small Scottish island containing ruins of a 14th-century priory, a sculptured cross from 1510, and many carved stones unearthed from Viking graves. Which has very little relevance to Alnwick, to the current owners or quality accommodation. Perhaps of more relevance, I am informed, is that it is also namenamed after a luxury cruise liner. You can't email them but you can phone the Guesthouse on (01665) 603559 and that's enough for anyone, shurely? |

WHITE SWAN |
A gimmick, the effect of which
hasn't worn off in fifty years -not even a little bit - is that its
function room has the fittings from the First Class Smoking Lounge from the
SS Olympic, one of the Titanic's sister ships.
Out of historical interest - and certainly not wishing to cash in on the film - they held Titanic Weekends where they wear Titanic Clothes, served Titanic food and charged Titanic prices. Presumably there was also a rowing boat so they can keep jumping in and out of it like Kate Winslet did in the film. And the evening may have finished by all guests having a bucket of icy water chucked over them. But I doubt it. There is a public bar so you can look round even if you don't stay here.
This
links to a site showing the world's Titanic memorials as well as pictures
of the White Swan. That
, on the other hand, links to a totally different site, this time specifically
about the Olympic. Apparently even the revolving door came from the Olympic.

OAKS HOTEL
|
An Englishwoman who lives in Canada kept emailing
me to tell me how great the Oaks Hotel is. She stayed there once and apparently
beleives that it's fantastic; the owner's really nice and it's a shame that
I left them out before.
Their phone number is 01665
510014 and their fax number is 603219. If you
stay there and don't like it then email me and I may give you this person's
email address so she can defend her views to you. |

| Other accommodation
:
Aln House, South Road 01665 602265 Hotspur Hotel,
Bondgate Without, 01665 510101 Plough Hotel, Bondgate Without 01665 602395 There's also a cottage in Whittingham which has its own site and which someone asked me to link to. If you're dialling from outside the UK you need to dial the international code +44-1665 followed by the six figure number listed). If you book with any of them, do mention Alnwick on Lion because it will almost certainly confuse them - they probably won't have heard of it and some of them may not have heard of the internet. (That's no
longer the case, at least as far as the internet is concerned because many
of them do have their own webpages now - but I like that joke so I'm
going to leave it in.) |
